In-Progress Critique Blog Post
1. I think that the strengths of this animation may lie in the use of color and how I use it to highlight important objects via contrast. For example, I used a cooler and darker color scheme throughout the setting in order to create a more soothing atmosphere. However, the use of red with Santa and the book on the elf's bed signified to the audience that they are important parts of the scene and help to enhance them, as well as giving the eyes resting points from all the blues and greens. I also received comments on the lighting and how it works well to make it look like the scene takes place at night.
2. I feel like I could shift the lighting around a little so the lamp is brighter; one of my classmates mistook the book on the elf's bed for a box, so having more lighting there will help to show that it is, indeed, a book. Additionally, another one of my classmates called the scene a hallway when I want it to look more like a wide room, so I feel like adding more minor objects (another bookshelf, a couch, etc.) around the space would help to make it feel more homely. Furthermore, no one commented on this but I do feel like I should make the scene proportional; I don't want Santa to be huge (though he is tall in contrast with the elf's belongings) for example. And lastly, I need to make sure Santa's actions are fast enough that he looks like the freakish force of ungodly nature I intend to portray him as.
3. Question A: What is the story the colors are trying to tell?
Answer A: The elf lives in a calm and idyllic home, which I intended to show with cooler colors. However, he is soon in danger as Santa comes to attack him for escaping the toy factory, and I intended to depict the danger with the highly saturated reds.
Question B: How do the colors work with the character?
Answer B: I actually have two characters-- the elf and Santa. The elf is a low saturation green and generally matches the environment around him, to show that he feels home in this place and belongs there. Santa, on the other hand, is a high saturation red to show how he is unwelcome and dangerous in the scene, as he intends to attack the elf.
